Forbidden Erotica: Vintage Pornographic Photos (VERY NSFW)

I want to state upfront that this blog post contains photos of a sexually explicit nature and if that isn’t something that sits comfortably with you, best to bypass it. Although, it’s hard to imagine anyone could exist on the internet in this day and age while remaining objectionable to such things. Anyway… with that said…

The photos in this post date from between 1870 through to the 1930s and are from the Rotenberg Collection. They have been scanned from the Taschen book, ‘Forbidden Erotica‘. Erotic postcards reached popularity in the 1890s and extended through to the 30s. Between 1919 and 1939, over 20 million of them were produced (mostly by men for men). In a time where laws were different, many of these postcards featured underage models and depictions of bestiality (it’s okay… none of those photos are legal to reprint). The identity of the overwhelming majority of models and photographers are, to this day, unknown. It is said that the bulk of the models were prostitues. Evidence exists that suggests there were some models who were mental patients and not told exactly what the photographs were for.

While the content of photographs from this period weren’t subject to the same laws,¬†authorities¬†were very quick to destroy as many of these photographs as possible in an effort to protect the public. I’d like to share this quote, taken from the book ‘Secret and Forbidden: The Moral History of the Passions of Mankind’ and re-printed in ‘Forbidden Erotica':

pornography can only be rampant in the soil manured by prudery, and in an age where the contrast of spirit and flesh is the strongest.

Are things much different today? Pornography serves a purpose typically dictated by the environment one grows up in. The more repressive the society, the more pornography tends to flourish. With that said, please enjoy this collection of ‘Forbidden Erotica’. All photos have been scanned at 300dpi, and if this post isn’t routinely avoided, I may post some more.

  1. I love it! One book I’m working on is actually set in Victorian times – I’ve included some mention of pornographic photos just because they fascinate me so much. A lot of people don’t seem to realise we’ve been doing the same kinds of things since time began
